About Lisbon

Lisboa

Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is a welcoming city whose natural beauty, rich historic past, bustling neighbourhoods and mix of far-off cultures and contemporary life style, make it one-of-a-kind, and it has been attracting more visitors each year .

Lisbon's unique setting, laying on the north bank of the River Tagus ('Tejo', in portuguese) where the river flows into the Atlantic Ocean, together with its hilly landscape, provide for mesmerizing views, always with Tejo in sight. For this, it is known as city of Light, and also as city of the Seven Hills, and has been an inspiration to a number of poets and artists.

The encounter of cultures over time is present in the diversity of neighborhoods: from the lively mediaeval neighborhoods, with their tangled streets leading up to the Castle, to the 18th century Pombaline grid of Baixa that opens to the river at Praça do Comércio, to the monumental Belém area, where you can visit Jerónimos, the recently renovated Coach Museum, or the new MAAT, Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology. Following the river inland, there is Parque das Nações, a contemporary leisure area, which holds the Oceanarium, where the connection between Portugal and the sea is patent.

Around Lisbon, you can find the World Heritage site of Sintra, with its amazing natural parks and palaces, as well as the costal towns of Cascais and Estoril, and plenty of beaches and coastal sights to choose from.

Humberto Delgado's Airport (Lisbon) is an international gateway with flights departing and arriving from almost anywhere in the world and is only 7 km away from the center of Lisbon, and just a few km from the venue at IST and the hotels nearby. The AeroBus leaves every 20m (from 7:00am till 11:00pm) and it costs more or less 4 €. For more information visit the Carris web site.
  • Taxi: Price around 10 €.
